Endangered monarch butterflies boom amid wet hot Canadian summer on the Prairies Backyard enthusiasts report big surge — from caterpillar to chrysalis and butterfly — amid long-term declines https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/manitoba/monarch-butterfly-boom-canada-9.7305314 [1000000830.jpg] AI: The northern range of the monarch butterfly reaches southern Canada, stretching from Alberta to Nova Scotia in the east and into southern British Columbia in the west. This northern breeding limit is bound by the availability of milkweed plants, extending up to about 54° N in the central provinces. [1000000828.jpg] AI: Milkweeds (Asclepias spp.) span over 100 species native across the Americas, with distinct ranges depending on the specific type. Common milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) ranges across the eastern and central United States and southern Canada. Western regions feature species like showy milkweed (Asclepias speciosa) and narrow-leaf milkweed. AI: Asclepias spp. is the scientific name for milkweeds, a large group of wild plants with over 200 types. They get their name from the thick, white milk juice inside their stems and leaves. These plants are very important because monarch butterfly caterpillars only eat milkweed leaves to survive. If you want to grow these plants, tell me your general area so I can help you find a native milkweed species that fits your garden. Eastern monarchs fly to the Oyamel fir forests in central Mexico. Western monarchs fly to the coastal California groves. The Amazing Monarch Life Cycle
Sorry there is enough pesticides in the world's environment to kill off another 200 species of bugs and butterflies....
Good news for the prairies. I've seen fewer and fewer butterflies on the coast.
Flora and fauna have immense value and it is about time we realised that!!
I did notice more of those this summer, not significantly more, but more for sure.

Through amendments to the Public Lands Act in July, the province eliminated protections for greater sage grouse in designated protection and recovery zones. That same month, helium extraction company Thor Resources had a site approved within the bird's habitat. Even less in Saskatchewan. Doing better in the States at perhaps a half million. Mostly Wyoming and Montana.
