FIFA , what will Van be like

avatar Once you go black 2026-05-25 06:14

I’m hearing that the hotels are no where near as booked as was expected.

avatar Tsubame 2026-05-25 08:16

I'm so glad I don't live in Vancouver anymore. During 2010 Olympics I lived in Marpole, and had to commute to North Van on transit. What a gongshow.

avatar MikeHawk696 2026-06-02 01:53

like what the other guy said, it's gonna be simply more of a gong show. since there has been some Qatar special police forces spotted working with the RCMP. not sure about the VPD since, they rejected the idea of being bodyguards for Gianni Infantino, Mattias Grafström, and company...

Someone told me today it was just leaked it is actually costing triple what the city said it was .

The really rich who run construction/property development will make millions. Unfortunately they are the ones who tell politicians what to do. The amount of WCup clothing sitting unsold in stores is incredible. Walmart, Sport Chek, and even places you wouldn’t expect like Hugo Boss. Retailers are going to lose tons of money.

masterpoonhunter said: News reports taxpayers are on the hook for $1B for the WC in Canada. Half from fed taxes, the other half to the provinces and municipal taxes. I guess like all the other cost overruns etc, this is just noise as far as the political system is concerned. Click to expand... And it all lands on taxpayers to bail out this shit-bucket. I don't mind paying for things we need -- schools, hospitals etc, but I hate having to pay for any of these 'good for business' bullshit events that just cost me money and result in a reduction in services and an increase in costs! If I wanted to go to FIFA events in Van I'd be dropping close to $5000 for tickets, accommodations etc. Well, my property taxes this year, after grants, just hit that magic number ... so no support for FIFA from me. I'd love to see a 10 year moratorium on 'events' that require any infrastructure or funding from taxpayers. Put the money towards services and helping young people.

Up the buy in and make it a referendum question to host this kind of thing. This shit cannot be left to politicians who all can be bought. Major fuckery pretty much at every level of our so called governments.

I was unaware that FIFA was happening this soon, but I haven’t noticed any increase on any of my corporate accounts at hotels I am on the lookout for any super hot travelling workers though The cost of everything is nowhere near the Olympics. I don’t think there will be that much of a surge. But there are already a ton of scams so just be more tentative to whatever is being posted. Something seems too good to be true. It probably is. As far as parking goes, I’ve always had a private stall in the heart of downtown, so it’s never an issue for me. I have had a few offers on my stall, but I don’t like to share. Haha

I am working at the World Cup at Lumen Field, just picked up credentials a few blocks from Lumen. Its not the traffic that is the concern. There is still a lot of ugly near the stadium. I really feel for the people that spend thousands to come to Seattle. Why on god's green earth would you do this? Its pretty gross there. I can't sugar my feelings, I took the bus to Lumen and yuck. I stood up and did not sit because standing puts me in a more defensive stance than sitting if someone attacks me. There are so many junkies that catch the bus here.

This is unlike any other world cup. Winnipeg has many nationalities. During WC there are lots of cars with flags on their windows, especially Portugal, Spain, Brazil and Argentina. In the past few days I have only seen one car with flags.

Just wait til the games get started and (insert country) wins a game. 🤣 The bandwagons will be flying their flags … But let’s hope Brazil goes deep just cuz of Brazilian girl fans and their tiny yellow T’s doing the conga haha

I go for a permanent ban on these activities. Your are right put more toward young people and community services (police, firefighters and especially hospitals and health care). Looking at Canada from the rest of the world, Canada is an very expensive country to go to. So regular working people would never make it here. Just the very well off and superrich. Canada is not a tourist country... its an immigration country that people want to get to, but we have geography and cold winters....

Tonight's match Australia vs. Turkiye is at 9 PM so ideally book your downtown SP at 9:30 and get out 10:30 to avoid traffic.

Was down town Saturday morning, and went around some of the street set-ups. Maybe it's just me, and I'm not a big sports fan, but I didn't really see much other than some food booths, over-priced souvenir stands, a few flags and soccer balls hanging across some streets. And that was the day of a game (albeit many many hours before). I guess once all the drunks descend on bars after a game it changes, but probably not for the better. I pity anyone that has to deal with the drunken tourists.

avatar pleasureprinciple 2026-06-14 15:54

Taxpayers foot the bills and FIFA walks away with the revenue tax free. Pathetic.

avatar Cock Throppled 2026-06-15 02:10

Where are all the addicts? Was in the down town east side and yes, there were some nodding out on the sidewalks, and there were 5-10 in some lanes, but nowhere near the dozens and dozens usually congregating in the lanes around the Carnegie Centre. There were more east on Main, but stll fewer than "normal."

avatar Equity Market investor 2026-06-15 02:24

I noticed that as well. A large amount has diminished in just a few months time. Transfered to the Interior and up north. Cock Throppled said: Where are all the addicts? Would like to see source of information about transferring people from the ally behind the Carnegie Centre.
